You have almost certainly heard of vitamin C, but are you aware of its wide-ranging chemical properties? This synoptic question provides a significant challenge for any student nearing the end of their post-16 studies, as it requires an understanding of the concepts of colour, delocalisation, redox, molecular formulae, acidity, calculations involving weak acids, dot and cross diagrams and radicals.
The question is taken from the Salters A2 paper 2854, set in June 2008. OCR has given permission for its use here, but the responsibility for the answers and comments rests solely with CHEMISTRY REVIEW.
