So much has been written about the Covid-19 pandemic being ‘unprecedented’. When the situation was first reported in the UK in early 2020, I remember my students asking ‘Do you think exams will be cancelled?’ and I suggested that this would be highly unlikely and to prepare for exams to go ahead as normal. I thought that the exam boards and the government would have effective contingency plans in place. Even with schools and colleges having to close, I thought exams would still happen, as they represented a situation where social distancing could easily be maintained.
Well, 2 years on, and no public exams have taken place in UK schools since the summer of 2019. This is set to be a big deal for year 13 students taking end-of-course exams. Whether you are reading this as a first-year or second-year A-level student, you are unlikely to have ever sat a formal external examination and had to deal with the pressures involved.
