ARM Holdings has been one of the most successful UK firms of the last 20 years. Based at a science and technology park in Cambridge, over the years ARM has built up the reputation and expertise to allow it to design the microchips that power so much in our everyday lives.
From the start, ARM did not offer exclusivity with certain manufacturers, and so ARM designs can be found in pretty much any handheld device across the globe. ARM licences the designs of its chips to the larger semiconductor firms such as NEC and Nvidia, which manufacture huge numbers of these chips. For each chip produced, ARM earns a few cents in royalties, and these have added up to a very profitable business model.
