What is business?
Management and leadership

The AQA specification is broken down into ten sections over the 2 years. In this column, Phil Waterhouse focuses on section 1 (‘What is business?’) and section 2 (‘Managers, leadership and decision making’)

Sections 1 and 2 act as gateways into the A-level course. For those of you who studied the subject at GCSE, much of the subject content will be familiar. For those new to the subject, you will be introduced to some key terms and jargon that might seem challenging. Ultimately, these two sections form the building blocks for what follows later in the course.

This topic was brought into the specification to ensure that, as well as knowing all the key terms etc., business students were aware of the importance of business within countries and on a larger global scale. Examiners wanted students to have an awareness of how important certain businesses are in terms of employment and the revenue and wealth that they generate.
