Kate Jones spoke to Owen Burek, founder of Save the Student, about how his teenage coding hobby led him to build a successful £1 million online business

I ’m sure most of you would agree that earning a decent living by doing something you love and only having yourself to answer to is up there on the list of ultimate life goals. But for many, this remains a lofty and distant dream. Why is this? Maybe because it usually involves taking a leap of faith — a risk — and stepping into the unknown with no guarantee that what you’re doing is going to work. So how can you go about making the dream a reality?

For Owen Burek, the story begins at age 12. Back in the early 2000s, when the internet was in its infancy and you had to commandeer the home telephone line and dial up each time you wanted to connect to the world wide web, the idea of having access to the internet on your mobile anytime, anywhere seemed extremely unrealistic.
