Over the past 25 years there has been a dramatic increase in the proportion of 18 year olds going to university. It is possible that there is a correlation between education and a tendency to question orders. A degree gives people more self-confidence and a greater ability to see faults, but maybe not enough wisdom to see the end results. More graduates in the workplace poses an interesting problem for management in business institutions: how do leaders manage a highly educated workforce?

Managers have to find the style of management that will be most effective with their given workforce. Fortunately there are a few styles that they can choose from (Figure 1). Each style has its advantages and disadvantages, and the suitability of each depends on the given working environment.
