Spotify is probably a major part of your life and has been a stunning success in terms of how it has managed the transition from just being a great app to being able to monetise the service to become profitable. With the app itself being free, the genius lies in being able to make money from it.
Companies face a number of options when monetising apps. While the founders of Spotify were initially reluctant to follow the advertising model, as it did not align with what they fundamentally believed in, it has proven to be very successful. Customers can still opt for a free service, but this means having to put up with targeted adverts. Of the 100 million subscribers, 40% opt for a paid service — this is up 100% on June 2015.
