Evaluation and Edexcel 20-mark questions

To reach Level 4 on 20-mark questions, you need a ‘coherent and logical’ chain of reasoning

All Edexcel 20-mark questions are triggered by the term ‘evaluate’. This requires a balanced answer that leads you towards a conclusion that provides (and justifies) a recommendation or solution.

At the top level of the Edexcel mark scheme comes a phrase that will affect the wording of every 20-mark question: ‘an effective conclusion that proposes a solution and/or recommendations’. To give candidates a serious chance of achieving this, the board has decided to make every 20-marker a choice between two options, as in the following example:
