John Bloor left school at 15 and worked as a trainee plasterer before setting up his own building firm, which became one of the largest privately owned housebuilding companies in the UK.
In 1983, while looking at the disused factory site for the Triumph motorcycle company as a plot of land, he also acquired the brand name itself. Initially, Bloor sublicensed the brand and concentrated on developing the construction side of his operations. In 1991 he decided to invest over £80 million in rebuilding the brand and opened a new factory in Hinckley, Leicestershire. The challenge for Bloor was that while the Triumph marque was well known and loved, high performance and relatively cheaper bikes from Japanese brands now dominated the market.
