Steel is important for any modern industrial economy because so many other industries — such as car manufacturing, construction and engineering — use steel as their base material.

UK steel is in crisis. During the 1970s more than 200,000 people were employed in the UK steel sector but in 2016 the number stands at just over 30,000.
