case study

Coke vs Pepsi

A vital skill of any business course is the ability to compare and contrast the actions of different companies. This can often be done most effectively by looking at firms that operate within the same industry and compete against each other

The cola market is an area that is close to my heart. As neither a tea nor coffee drinker, I satisfy my caffeine cravings by consuming far too many soft drinks. Just as my individual behaviour needs to change, the major players in this market are having to do the same.

It might surprise you that PepsiCo is a larger firm than Coca-Cola. Pepsi has achieved this by diversifying away from relying on just one product. Today the company has a whole range of products within its portfolio. This started in the 1960s when the company first launched Diet Pepsi and acquired the Mountain Dew brand, and then bought the Frito-Lay brand that to this day is the largest crisp and snack manufacturer in the world. PepsiCo also owns the Walkers brand in the UK, and its logo and lettering are based on the Frito-Lay design.
