case study

Human resources at Google

Phil Waterhouse continues his series of case studies on the key functional areas with a look at the standard-bearer for human resources

Google is one of the most desirable companies to work for and manages to attract some of the world’s smartest individuals as employees. This is based on the firm’s reputation as an employer, the unique approach it takes to human resources (HR) and how it values and motivates its workers. Many firms have tried to replicate the Google model, but they have not always managed to match exactly what Google can offer and this is testimony to the company and how it utilises its staff.

The Google offices around the globe are not your typical offices. They feature slides, chill-out areas, playrooms and, perhaps most importantly of all, fantastic dining facilities that feed staff members for free. The use of fringe benefits serves the company well — keeping the staff fed and motivated means they are likely to work more productively and for longer, as they do not have to worry about taking time away from their tasks. The dining halls are designed to make sure that the staff interact with each other and feel engaged and involved with the business.
