Since 2010 the government has cut spending on benefits for disabled people
Government spending is a vital component of the UK economy. Just under 45p of every pound spent is spent by the state.
Table 1 shows that government spending has risen by £50 billion since the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition came into power in 2010/11. This increase is surprising given newspaper coverage of ‘austerity’ (public spending cuts). The mismatch between perceptions of austerity and the reality of growing public spending is down to two factors.
