The Peak District

A great location for UK manufacturers

Phil Waterhouse presents a selection of case studies that you can use in your BUSS4 Section A exam

The Peak District is the second-most visited national park in the world after Mount Fuji, Japan. It is located in the heart of England and one of the main reasons that it has so many visitors (22 million each year) is that it is accessible to so many people. Major cities such as Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester are close by and 80% of the UK’s 65 million population live within a 4-hour drive.

This makes the area around the Peak District a great location for businesses and industries to locate and enjoy the benefits of such a central position. The area also benefits from fantastic infrastructure links, as it is served by an extensive network of motorways and major roads, as well as direct rail links to London, Birmingham, the North West and the North East. For international travel, four major airports are within easy reach. East Midlands is the closest. It is the second-largest air freight hub in the country after Heathrow and provides easy and cheap transportation to the 9 million people who live within 1 hour’s travel of the airport.
