BUSS4 shoe-in

Phil Waterhouse helps you analyse and evaluate in your exam, with examples of good and bad practice

The BUSS4 exam can be a major challenge in terms of how to best prepare for the research task and how to use case studies effectively. Looking back at examiner reports from the last few years, the major area where students let themselves down was when they simply described and told a story about a particular business. This is not what examiners are looking for. They want you to use examples to analyse and evaluate the major arguments.

Last year’s pre-release focused on China, which led many candidates to merely describe what companies such as Starbucks and Ikea did in relation to their operations within the country, rather than using the businesses effectively to answer the question set. This year’s pre-release on UK manufacturing gives you plenty of opportunities to bring in great examples, but it is essential that they are used effectively. A potential example to use is that of the UK shoe industry and how it has changed dramatically over the last century. The following sections take the form of student answers and are supplied with examiner comments to show how they display description, analysis and evaluation.
