The Lake District is one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, and in 1951 it was designated as one of the first national parks. While the population of the park is relatively small at under 50,000 people, its landscape and natural charms attract over 14.8 million visitors a year. These visitors spend an average of £995 million a year in the park and the tourist pound is an attractive market for any business to target.
In 1970, 2 years after the M6 motorway was completed, local farmers John and Barbara Dunning spotted a huge business opportunity. Larger companies had decided against opening up a motorway service station in the area, so the couple decided to set up their own services. Their services remain the only independent family-owned service stations on the UK road network.
