Manufacturing has become a much less important part of the UK economy in the last 40 years. The last year in which the UK had a trade surplus in manufactured goods was 1983. In the 1970s manufacturing employed 25% of the workforce — that figure is now barely 8%.
However, although the UK may no longer be the workshop of the world (as it was called 100 years ago), what is left of UK manufacturing is generally efficient and successful. UK aerospace is an example of a manufacturing industry that has made significant progress in recent years.
