The desire for improved rail links is a topical issue, with HS2 and HS3 high on the agenda for the upcoming UK general elections. An integrated transport network is vitally important for a developed economy. While air travel has increased exponentially over the last three decades, investment in rail has lagged behind. It is a more environmentally friendly option in relation to air and road use and is also very important in terms of freight.

The UK rail network is in major need of an upgrade. Network Rail, which is responsible for the maintenance and upgrade of the network, has announced a 5-year plan to invest £38 billion in rail infrastructure, which includes the construction of new tracks, the renovation of stations and the upgrade of existing lines. The announcement comes after it emerged that Network Rail was expecting a record fine of £70 million for delays suffered by passengers over the past 5 years.
