The thing that has changed most about the nature of work in the last 20 years is how contactable people are. Before smartphones and the internet, when you left the office, that was it. Save for an emergency visit by an HR representative to a file room to dust off the ‘home address’ details, you wouldn’t be contacted about business while you were at home.
Today I spend the majority of my time looking at a screen, whether checking my phone for messages — both work and personal — when I wake up in the morning or looking at the iPad and television at night. I run a web operations team during the day and my own business out of hours, so I work a lot. Being uncontactable is unimaginable to me, and I need to manage how I split my attention when I’m looking at my screens.
