Richard Leftley spent part of his childhood in the middle east and Africa, as his father was involved in building airports. During this time Leftley became aware of the devastation that natural disasters such as floods can have on both individuals and communities.
When Leftley left university in 1995, he joined reinsurance broker Benfield Greig. In his time at the company he gained a grounding in insurance and witnessed the number of employees grow from 50 to 1,800. In 2008 the company was acquired by insurance giant Aon, but by that time Richard had gone in his own direction. While working in Zambia in 2002, as part of the Voluntary Service Overseas programme, he formulated his business idea.
