Rio de Janeiro has the third-most expensive hotel rooms in the world. With the city set to host the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics, the need for cheaper places to stay has created an opportunity for entrepreneurs to set up lower-cost, dormitorystyle hostels. While this style of accommodation is common across much of the world, the first Brazilian hostels only opened in 2006.
With the World Cup and Olympics looming, the number of hostels in the city is continuing to grow at 30% each year. Today Rio has 72 hostels, used by both foreign tourists and travellers from across Brazil. Prices start from $25 for a bunk bed in a large dormitory.
