To show application, you need to pick the key factors, events and concepts from the examiner’s text. Ultimately this requires one ability above all others: the ability to understand the significance of the business story being unfolded. This ‘Exam guide’ will set out some of the factors that recur in exam papers — because they recur in business life. Before that, though, it is helpful to understand how to read a piece of exam text.

In the hands of a weak student, a quick read of the examiner’s case study yields no more than a few references to the company name and a few facts plucked from the text.
