It might not be your ideal way to spend a Saturday, but there is clearly a market for endurance events. Participation numbers in triathlons and marathons have seen major growth in the last 25 years, with triathlon now the world’s fastestgrowing sport.
As well as these more traditional events, extreme obstacle racing has also seen massive growth over the last few years, with over 1 million annual participants in the USA and 200,000 in the UK. The industry has a total market value of £200 million, with charges of between £50 and £125 per participant. Tough Mudder is the industry leader, but there are many other companies that offer something similar, such as Mad Monk or Rat Race.
