Does a company’s headquarters say anything about the culture of the business? There are many examples of head offices that are used as symbols of a firm, such as the various Google offices or Innocent Smoothies’ Fruit Towers HQ. Schein calls these the visible layers of the culture of the organisation. While other aspects of the culture are less visible, they are perhaps more indicative of the way the business is perceived, so just how important is the design and layout of a particular business’ operations?

The relaxing of UK Sunday trading laws in the 1980s kick-started the growth of the supermarkets. The major supermarkets saw an opportunity to develop out-of-town stores on the outskirts of major population areas, usually on brownfield sites.
