More than 60 million tablets are expected to be sold worldwide this year and the market is set to grow further. The dominance of the iPad is proving to be a tougher nut to crack than some had hoped. HP spent £800 million on developing an operating system for the Touchpad but this device was only on the shelves for 6 weeks before the company realised that it was unlikely to succeed at a price of £399 and pulled it out of the market. The market share of Apple is well over 70%.

The one device that has the potential to take market share is tipped to be the Kindle Fire. While the Kindle does not have the technical capabilities of the iPad, it does have a key advantage in that it is likely to be less than a third of the price. It also does a lot more than being a straightforward e-reader. The new device will allow access to more than 11,000 streaming films and TV shows as well as simplifying ordering via the online Amazon store.
