Great British companies

Rolls-Royce

In the second of this series, Ian Marcousé looks at another British exporting company

ROLLS-ROYCE

Rolls-Royce Group plc is one of Britain’s most successful engineering businesses, manufacturing engines for planes, ships and submarines. On the first day of the 2011 Paris Air Show, it announced $2.9 billion of orders. This pushed the company’s order book above $60 billion for the first time (Figure 1) and will provide enough work for the next 4 years. Happily, the orders keep coming, so the 40,000 staff employed by Rolls-Royce can feel secure in their jobs for many years to come.

In 2011 around 85% of the company’s sales will come from overseas. Although only 15% of sales are to UK businesses, 55% of Rolls-Royce jobs are in Britain, mainly around Derby. Rolls- Royce is one of the leading UK employers of skilled workers, perhaps proving that Britain can still make things.
