Zhang Yin (also known by her Cantonese name Cheung Yan) is the founder and director of Nine Dragons Paper Holdings. After being made redundant from her first job, she is now China’s richest woman and the world’s wealthiest self-made businesswoman (Table 1).

Zhang Yin (pronounced ‘Jang Yeen’) was born in 1957 in Shaoguan, Guangdong (historically the most pro-capitalist province in China), the eldest of eight children. Her father was a lieutenant in the People’s Liberation Army and his rapport with the Communist Party would provide a welcome boost to his daughter’s career. In China, guanxi (business contacts and connections, especially with government officials) is a vital prerequisite to successful business.
