UPGRADE

A* performance at AQA Unit 3

Mike Pickerden shows you the secrets to getting an A* grade

In 2010 the A* grade was awarded for the first time for all A-level subjects. The reason for introducing the A* was to help both universities and employers identify the elite students in terms of academic achievement. Consequently, to achieve an A* is no easy task.

For AQA business studies, the A* grade can only be given after a student has successfully completed all of the four units, and they must achieve at least 320 UMS marks out of the maximum 400 for the entire A-level (a score of 80%). Furthermore, at least 180 of those marks must be obtained from the A2 units, which represents an overall score of 90% for Units 3 and 4. To illustrate this, in 2010 a total of 23,357 students completed the AQA business studies qualification, of which only 3.8%, or roughly 888, gained an A*.
