Porter’s generic strategies

This article looks at one of the most well-known strategic tools used in business and management: Michael Porter’s generic strategies

Management guru Michael Porter was born in Michigan, USA in 1947, and is an internationally renowned management consultant and author. A former captain in the US Army Reserve, he is a professor at Harvard Business School, the top graduate business school in the USA. According to Harvard University’s website, Porter is ‘generally recognized as the father of the modern (business) strategy field’.

Porter suggested that there are three generic strategies that can enable any business to achieve a sustainable competitive advantage (see Figure 1):
