The 2009/10 football season witnessed some remarkable examples of management and leadership. Manager of the Year was Roy Hodgson, after an achievement Alex Ferguson described as ‘one of the best British performances of all time’ in taking Fulham to the Europa Cup Final. Other outstanding managerial successes were José Mourinho with Inter-Milan and Carlo Ancelotti with Chelsea. Muppet of the year awards might have been offered to Liverpool’s Rafael Benitez and Hull’s Phil Brown.

In the week that Fulham beat Hamburg in the semi-final, the British party leaders were having their third televised debate. Cameron versus Clegg versus Brown was (perhaps) a more serious encounter, with the prize of leading Britain for 5 years. Here were three party leaders being tested on who would make the best leader of the country. The electorate would be tested on whether they cared most about who they liked, or who they trusted. In the week before the election, research by pollster Ipsos Mori showed Gordon Brown bottom by far on likeability, but top by far in answer to the question: ‘Who would be best in a crisis?’
