The Hong Kong businessman Li Ka-shing is a self-made billionaire. Not only is he Asia’s wealthiest man, but this year he is also the sixteenth richest man on the planet, according to the Forbes magazine rich list, with an estimated wealth of around US$16 billion. This is astronomically larger than Sir Alan Sugar’s estimated wealth of US$1.2 billion.
Li Ka-shing is chairman of the Cheung Kong Group, a conglomerate business that covers almost every aspect of life, including telecommunications, electricity, consumer electronics, property development and investment, shipping and retail. The Cheung Kong Group operates in 56 countries and employs over 260,000 staff worldwide. Despite being a billionaire, Li, like his American counterpart Warren Buffet, is known for leading a simple lifestyle. He has donated over US$1.3 billion to charitable causes, and is one of Asia’s most generous philanthropists.
