Applying to medical school

Getting into a medical school is a challenging and competitive process. Careers adviser and biology teacher Marcus Allen outlines the key features of a successful application

More medical doctors will need to be trained in the UK over the next 10 years. There are varied routes into medicine, including an apprenticeship track. Most medical training remains through an undergraduate degree at a medical school following secondary or tertiary education.

Medicine is a popular choice, and medical schools are highly selective. Here I will outline the four areas that you should focus on during preparation and application (see Figure 1). Each one should be given equal focus, although you may have to spend more time on some than others to achieve this. All are important and, to be successful, none should be neglected.
