Electric eels are not true eels – they are knife fish. True eels are in the order Anguilliformes. Electric eels are in the order Gymnotiformes – scaleless knife fish belonging to the genus Electrophorus, closely related to catfish.
They are commonly called eels owing to their long cylindrical body shapes. They range from 1.5 to 2.4 metres long and their mass can be as much as 100 kilograms.
