UPGRADE

Answering the question that is asked

Whether students’ grades are awarded by examiners following written examinations, or by formalised teacher assessments, exam-style questions will be used. Former chief examiner Martin Rowland recommends that you brush up your skills in answering this type of question

At the time of writing, educationalists in the UK are planning for a return to AS, A-level and Scottish Higher examinations in summer 2022. Unless we suffer another Covid-19 lockdown, when you read this article in April 2022 you will be preparing for these examinations.

In an attempt to mitigate the impact of disruptions to your studies caused by Covid-19, the four Ofqual-regulated boards offering AS and A-level examinations will publish a document for each subject, called an Advance Notice. These will list, in rank order, the main topics that will be tested in each examination paper and account for about 2/3 to 3/4 of the available marks. For each science subject, it will also indicate which of the assessed practical exercises and mathematical skills will be involved in these questions. If you are entering as an external student, please make sure you use your exam board’s website to access the Advance Notice for your course. The weblinks are:
