A career in nursing

Challenges and opportunities

Nurse consultant Joanne McPeake explains how the opportunities available during a nursing career are wide-ranging and why nursing can be a profession with multiple options and trajectories

The profile of nurses, nursing and the profession has increased since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. As a consequence, there has been an increase in the number of applications to UK universities for nursing degrees.

The nursing profession has changed dramatically in the last 100 years, although some of the general public still associate nursing with pictures of Florence Nightingale and have a traditional view of what nurses do. Nurses proudly provide fundamental patient care, but this is a small part of a varied and diverse role. Nursing provides the opportunity to work across different specialities with different members of the healthcare team, such as physiotherapists, pharmacists and doctors. Nurses are highly trained professionals who promote health and keep patients safe.
