Meiosis produces daughter cells that contain only one chromosome from each homologous pair and, through random assortment of chromosomes and crossing over between homologous chromosomes, are genetically different.
Many students write that meiosis produces gametes. While this is true for humans (see Figure 1(a)), it is not universally true.
