Testing practical skills

Competence in the laboratory doesn’t always result in good answers to questions designed to test practical skills in written examinations. Former senior examiner Martin Rowland examines why this might be and suggests how students might improve their ability to answer examination questions that relate to practical work

They also seemed reluctant to use their practical notebooks during their revision. When I encouraged them to change their approach to practical work, their performance in answering examination questions testing practical skills improved dramatically.
