Pharmacology?

Senior lecturer in pharmacology Richard Prince sheds light on the important field of pharmacology, delving into the world of drugs and how they are developed

Pharmacology has a long history as a scientific discipline and has existed as a university degree subject for decades. But many people have never heard of pharmacology, let alone studied it.

Pharmacology is the science of how drugs work. It is central to the discovery of new drugs. It contributes billions of pounds each year to the UK economy and employs tens of thousands of people. Many people choose to study pharmacology at university because they want a career in the pharmaceutical industry or in biomedical research. Others are simply interested in learning more about the medicines that save lives on a daily basis. But it is important first to understand how pharmacology as a subject fits into the broader topic of biomedical research.
