It can be an A-level candidate’s worst nightmare. It certainly was mine. I can picture it now — sitting in the hall, the regulation distance from the next person, and everything was going wrong. My stomach was churning, I was hot and leaving sweaty marks on the exam paper. I couldn’t make sense of some of the questions and had forgotten the answers to those I could understand. The minute hand on the big clock above the stage appeared to be going round faster and faster. Then, just as I was finally making some progress, the invigilator came out with those dreadful words, ‘You have 2 minutes left’. I had run out of time.
Running out of time should not really be a problem for most candidates, but using the time you have been allocated effectively is. Time management is not just about learning to write so fast that smoke comes from your pen nib. It is about writing only what is necessary and appropriate, and doing all the other things you need to do to succeed.
