Dogs have several roles in our society. As well as making great pets, they guide the blind, help the deaf, are employed as rescue dogs and can be used as sniffer dogs. Now it seems our canine friends may also be able to tell us if we have cancer by using their incredible sense of smell.
Over 150000 people died of cancer in the UK in 2010. Cancer is a group of diseases that can affect nearly all the cell types of the body. The cause of cancer is abnormal cell division (see BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES REVIEW, Vol. 24, No. 1, pp. 26–29).
