Limiting factors are simple to understand. If a process is not going at its maximum rate, something must be holding it back. Whatever the ‘something’ is, it is a limiting factor. It effectively limits the rate of the process under consideration.
So why would you be interested in limiting factors? Limiting factors play a huge part in understanding many different biological processes and how they operate under both laboratory conditions and in nature. The concept of limiting factors is also widely applied in many nonbiological situations, in economics and marketing theories, for example.
