Piranhas have a reputation as packhunting killers. However, recent research has begun to shed light on their behaviour and we might have to think again about them.

Most people have an image of piranhas fixed firmly in their minds. They are one of nature’s most vicious and ferocious killers. Everyone knows that piranhas will strip an animal — dead or alive — within seconds! In this summer’s 3D blockbuster movie, an underwater tremor sets free prehistoric man-eating piranha fish, which then attack everyone who gets into the water. As with most legends there is a nub of truth behind this public perception.
