The human body provides a home for trillions of microorganisms, living together with human cells, usually in harmony. Many microbes maintain our health while others cause illness. Yet surprisingly little is known about the roles that this astounding assortment of bacteria, fungi and other microbes play in human health and disease. To understand better what all these organisms are doing in our bodies, the US National Institute of Health recently established the Human Microbiome Project. This project aims to discover which microbes are common to all humans and how changes in this microbial community affect human health.
