What lies behind the scene on our cover? Well, at one level, the huge plethora of plants, animals and microbes that depend on the kelp at centre stage. Such underwater forests are even richer in biodiversity than terrestrial tropical rainforests. Scuba divers lucky enough to experience these ecosystems are regularly surprised by (and gracefully out-manoeuvred by) the sea lions and otters that play and hunt among the vegetation. These charming marine mammals also use the kelp as cover to hide from the top predators of the system — killer whales.
