In November 2011 a British citizen, Alfredo Sanchez, was arrested by Australian police on an international arrest warrant for falsely claiming more than £1 million in life insurance. He and his wife are alleged to have faked his death while holidaying in Ecuador in 2005. Sanchez is the latest in a line of similar cases which, today, would be charged as fraud by making a false representation under section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006. How is this offence defined and what does it cover?
