When the coalition government took office in May 2010 it reaffirmed its election pledge to drastically reduce the nation’s budget deficit of £155 billion by 2015. In response to this, government departments submitted their proposed savings to the Treasury during the summer. The chancellor of the exchequer then made definitive announcements about cutbacks in the October spending review. The new age of austerity is likely to impact on the English legal system in a number of ways.
