In the case of Adams v Lindsell (1818), Lindsell had written to Adams on 2 September offering to sell them some wool and requesting that the plaintiffs reply ‘in a course of post’. The letter was wrongly addressed and was not received until 5 September. Adams replied immediately and the letter of acceptance was received by Lindsell on 9 September. On 8 September, however, Lindsell had already sold the wool to another company.
