Medical consent and the law

Is medical consent a complication that shifts with time, or a fundamental defendable right?

This article is relevant to AQA A-level Paper 1 and OCR A-level Component 1.

Whether a patient can consent to an intrusive operation sometimes involving an alleged offence against the person has constantly troubled the courts. If the defence of medical consent is applicable, then consent will prevent the prosecution establishing an offence.
