Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) protects the right to respect for private and family life, home and correspondence. These are sometimes referred to as the four dimensions of personal autonomy and constitute one of the most open-ended provisions within the ECHR. The nature and scope of Article 8 is of interest as it provides an illustration of the living instrument concept, according to which the meaning and interpretation of convention rights is reflective of contemporary views and perspectives.
