Qualifying as a barrister

Darren Sylvester reviews recent changes to qualification as a barrister

The planned changes for qualification as a barrister will affect undergraduates starting law degrees and graduates starting law conversion courses from September 2020.

Currently, qualification as a barrister requires the completion of the academic stage (qualifying law degree or non-law degree), the vocational stage (Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) for non-law graduates; Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) for aspiring barristers) followed by a 1-year pupillage for barristers.
